Product information "Crane Song Phoenix TDM Version"

Phoenix is Crane Song's new suite of TDM plug-ins designed to emulate the best of analog tape. Designer Dave Hill's approach to DSP is truly unique, having recently created the "Aria" signal electronics package for ATR Service, a company that specializes in converting Ampex ATR-100 series transports into 1-inch stereo and 2-inch eight track recorders. His analog electronics designs are totally fresh, from Mic Preamps to Equalizers and Dynamics processors - plus decades of experience as a recording engineer - a depth of knowledge, attention to detail and familiarity with the analog recording process that has spawned a truly versatile and musical suite of plug-ins.
The Phoenix process is 3-D compared to most emulation plug-ins because it not only incorporates Magnetic Tape's nonlinear saturation characteristics but also incorporates "the other facets," like record/reproduce equalization curves as well as recording speed and signal electronics idiosyncrasies. The Phoenix suite is derived from HEDD technology, but with additional features specifically engineered and optimized for Digidesign's TDM architecture.
The Phoenix suite is five TDM plug-ins in one (detailed below), each respectively emulating one of tape's signature characteristics within which are three process-modifying "color" choices - Gold is approximately flat, Sapphire is brighter and Opal is warmer. The Level control adds the Phoenix process to the audio signal; Input Trim sets "how hard the tape is hit" and can also be used to prevent clipping for those cases where the incoming signal is too close to digital zero.
Learning what Phoenix can do will change the way you Track and Mix, a plug-in that can be used with complete confidence because, when the Level control is set to minimum, the Phoenix process is bit accurate, meaning the output exactly matches the input.

I also love his Phoenix plug-in and find it indispensable for adding warmth to ITB vocals and instruments that could benefit from more warmth and size, the Phoenix plug is fantastic...

The Phoenix suite is five TDM plug-ins in one:

* Luminescent is the most neutral sounding process of the five.
* Iridescent has a similar magnetic character, but with a fatter bottom and midrange.
This plug-in is most similar to the Tape knob on HEDD-192.
* Radiant has a more aggressive compression curve to emulate tape formulations with this charecteristic.
* Dark Essence is even more aggressive. The effect is similar to choosing a slower tape speed so that, when used on a vocal, Dark Essence can reduce sibilance problems. It also increases the apparent loudness of the signal.
* Luster starts more gently than the other four processes, but becomes as aggressive as Dark Essence when the process is at full scale.

Running within Digidesign's TDM architecture, Phoenix is very DSP efficient. It will run approximately twenty instances of a plug-in on a single DSP chip (HD system at 44.1 kHz sample rate). Phoenix is signal level, program material and sample rate dependent. The amount of color will increase with level; the smoothness of the process improves at higher sample rates
The Phoenix plug-in suite raises the plug-in standard and will make your digital world sound warmer, fatter and more analog. While the Phoenix process can be somewhat subtle on an individual track, the cumulative affect is immediately familiar, like listening to an analog playback for the first time. Additionally Phoenix goes beyond analog by allowing a selective level of control to produce just the desired artifacts AND that's some thing even the best of analog can't do. Soar with Phoenix and feel the spine-tingling rush that is the warmth and richness of analog.

Phoenix is amazing and has been a huge part of every mix I've done for years.  When I heard about the new HDX cards the first question I asked was whether Phoenix was making the move, and with the new AAX version it has! Andrew Scheps

Cranesong Phoneix is a must for any work I do.  Whether it's adding life to a digital piano, or bringing out the vocal in an IEM mix, Cranesong always delivers.  I never gig without it.Cranesong Phoneix is a must for any work I do.  Whether it's adding life to a digital piano, or bringing out the vocal in an IEM mix, Cranesong always delivers.  I never gig without it. With the Phoenix Plug in and it's assignable parameters, it is reminiscent of having your tape machines aligned the way you want it to sound, but now we can add these to individual inputs, from using "Dark Essence" on a kick drum or snare to Luminescent on your vocals and Guitars or stereo buss. I just recently put it across all my strings with the Sydney Symphony, it was killer.   I've always had my multitrack aligned at 30ips, non dolby at +6.  With Phoenix I can make it sound anyway I want, on any input or output and bring the entire mix to a new level of listening.
IT ROCKS the HOUSE,,
